What Is A Remortgage?

A remortgage is where you switch your mortgage lender during the term. This can be a for many reasons, such as the existing deal is coming to an end, you want to raise capital for any legal purpose, adding or removing a borrower or consolidation of other debts.

 

The most common reason for a remortgage is that your current deal has come to an end; you can do nothing and if you do so, you'll likely revert to the lenders standard variable rate, which is usually higher.

 

A remortgage is therefore completed to help reduce your outgoings, although sometimes the variable rate could benefit your circumstances.

When Should I Remortgage & How Long Does It Take

You can remortgage your property when ever you like, but normally you would do this when your existing mortgage deal is near it's end. Its always best to start the process up to 6 months in advance, as this will give you plenty of time to get all your documents together, research the most suitable deal and apply. If you leave it to late, then you might revert to the variable rate which is usually higher.

A remortgage can complete within a matter of weeks, but can sometimes take a few months, so the earlier you start the process the better.
